Location to offer large selection of kosher foods

MULTNOMAH — After about a year of construction, a new Safeway store is opening at 8145 SW Barbur Blvd. this month.

Constructed by Mackenzie (a Portland-area architectural firm known until July as Group Mackenzie Associates), the new 56,430-square-foot Barbur Safeway store replaces a 21,000-square-foot store built in 1968, which replaced another store constructed in 1942.

It is located at the intersection of Southwest Barbur and Multnomah boulevards, Southwest Capitol Hill Road and Southwest 19th Avenue. Thanks to lot consolidations approved by the Portland Bureau of Development Services in September 2012, the new Barbur Safeway features a much larger parking lot, with 135 total parking spots.

Northwest Division, told The Connection that the Barbur Safeway was one of the last two stores in the 116-store division that needed to be replaced, and that it would then be one of the first of 615 Safeway stores nationwide to be constructed as a podium or pedestal, with parking accessible from street level and the actual store above it.

As of Oct. 9, the Barbur Safeway had 180 employees — 140 new hires and 40 transfers, with 15 openings remaining. The new store manager will be James C. Brown, a 30-plus-year employee of Safeway who managed seven other stores before coming to Barbur.

The new store includes a Starbucks and a U.S. Bank branch. According to Safeway Inc. Northwest Division Public and Government Affairs Manager Luke Stanhope, this new Barbur Safeway also will have a sizable kosher segment, food produced or prepared according to Jewish dietary laws, including:

• A large offering of kosher bakery products

• Store within a store of kosher grocery — about 44 feet of grocery

• Nine doors of kosher frozen food

• Contract with Oregon Kosher (best practices consultant)

• All employees will go through kosher training before the store opens

• Store manager participated in extensive kosher practice training

• Kosher sushi

• Kosher Chinese food

• Good offering of kosher meat and seafood products

• Up to 8 feet of kosher dairy

• Up to 6 feet of kosher wine

This emphasis on keeping kosher is "unique to the Barbur store," Stanhope said. "Safeway strives to provide the freshest and most sought-after products for the local community. As a large number of Portland’s Jewish population resides in Multnomah Village and the surrounding area, we have gone to great lengths to ensure that there will be a wide variety of kosher food available."

The new Barbur Safeway store will open Nov. 6 to VIPs at 10 a.m. and to the general public at noon.
