The American Cancer Society has estimated that more than 51,000 Americans will be diagnosed with mouth cancer in 2018, with men twice as likely to develop oral cancer. And though the rate of death from oral cancer has been steadily decreasing over the last 30 years, it is wise to be aware of any changes in your mouth.

Oral cancer screenings are non-invasive and we recommend that you start screening at age 18, especially if any tobacco product is used. Regular visits to your dentist can help detect changes in your mouth, but schedule an appointment immediately if you notice any of the following changes in your mouth:

  • sores that bleed and don't heal
  • a thick lump or hard spot
  • roughened area or patch
  • numbness, pain, or tenderness
  • changes in your bite
  • At Columbia River Dental, oral cancer screenings are included with every exam at no additional charge. Regular visits can improve the chances that any suspicious areas are caught early at a time when cancer can be treated more easily.
