According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, more than 5.4 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer were treated in over 3.3 million people in the U.S. in 2012. More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined, and 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.

The vast majority of melanomas are caused by the sun. In fact, one UK study found that about 86% of melanomas can be attributed to exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. On average, a person's risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns. Therefore regular use of an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen reduces the risk of developing melanoma by 50%. And don't forget, your lips are also affected by the UV radiation, so make sure to also apply that lip balm containing SPF.

Skin cancer is easy to cure if diagnosed early and treated, and early detection cannot be understated. Treatments for skin cancer vary, but untreated damage to the skin and tissue can cause disfigurement. If you have any suspicious spots, be sure to get those sites checked out by your doctor or dermatologist so early diagnoses and treatment can be done.
