by: FILE PHOTO - BurgeScappoose Mayor Scott Burge was elected at a League of Oregon Cities meeting last week to serve as president-elect of the Oregon Mayors Association, beginning Jan. 12.

Burge will serve under Gervais Mayor Shanti Platt to garner an understanding of his responsibilities with the new position.

Platt will begin her term as president of the OMA Jan. 12 as well. Burge will begin his term as president of the OMA in early 2015.

“I’m pretty excited,” Burge said. “It means a lot, because to me, it’s all about the city and having somebody representing the organization.”

Burge said, as president of the OMA, he will work on statewide issues that affect cities and explore what mayors can do to influence those issues.

“There’s something like 236 mayors in the state and there’s no point in reinventing the wheel if there’s another mayor whose gone through it,” Burge said of working with the OMA.

Burge added that his new position will give Scappoose “exposure and positivity” throughout the region. He serves on the board of directors of the OMA along with five other Oregon mayors.
