Police say man hanged himself in public park, was discovered by residents out on a walk

The body of a 19-year-old St. Helens man was discovered near Nob Hill Nature Park in St. Helens Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 6.

Residents out for a walk near the park around 4 p.m. Tuesday reported finding a person who had hanged himself from a tree in the area, according to St. Helens Police Chief Terry Moss.

Moss said the residents who found the body initially reported the location as near the Columbia County Courthouse. Investigators later found the man in a tree near an embankment by Nob Hill Nature Park.

Investigators believe the cause of death was self-inflicted.

Moss said the teen had already graduated high school and was working at McDonald's. The victim's name is being withheld by the Spotlight to protect his privacy.
