Police recover loaded gun near Scappoose grocery store
Scappoose police say they recovered a loaded firearm near a busy supermarket last week.
According to police reports, officers responded to a report of found property at the intersection of Havlik Drive and Joe's Drive last Tuesday, July 17, near Fred Meyer in Scappoose.
Officers found a loaded firearm, later described as a .22 caliber gun.
"There were rounds in the magazine but not in the chamber of the weapon," Scappoose Police Chief Norm Miller stated via email, noting the firearm was found lying in the roadway of Havlik Drive, near Joe's Drive.
Police have yet to identify the owner of the gun and say it is being stored at the station.
"The property was taken by the Scappoose Police Department and placed into evidence for safekeeping," Miller stated.
While no one has come forward to claim the gun, Miller noted that there would be no crime for the loaded weapon being left in public, "unless they are a convicted felon."
The owner will need to provide proof of ownership before the police can release it back to anyone, Miller added.
There were no injuries reported.
