Cyclist dies as the result of August crash
A St. Helens man who was critically injured after being involved in a bicycle-versus-car crash last month has died as the result of his injuries.
Francis Joseph Alvarado, 67, died on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 11, as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash, according to St. Helens Police Department.
Preliminary information indicates the driver of a red Mitsubishi Mirage was in the right lane of Highway 30 near the intersection with McBride Street in St. Helens, heading eastbound, when he drifted into the bicycle lane, striking Alvarado on Thursday, Aug. 30, around 5:40 a.m.
The motorist involved in the crash has not been charged, has not been publicly identified, and was not injured in the crash.
SHPD officers said the investigation is ongoing and updated information has been provided to the Columbia County District Attorney's Office.
Alvarado was transported by ground ambulance to a Portland-area hospital where he was treated. Last week, the family reported to SHPD that Alvarado was still hospitalized and in stable condition, but the extent of his injuries were not known.
SHPD Officer Dustin King said the family is requesting privacy at this time.
