Indians trail by 28 but come back to make it close

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - Paul Revis scored four times for the Indians on Friday against Roosevelt. The Scappoose Indians discovered how hard it was to stop Roosevelt on Friday night, but they also learned they have some tenacity themselves as they bounced back from a 28-point deficit to make the game close.

Scappoose found themselves down two touchdowns after the first quarter, but came back to make it a little closer. Unfortunately, two quick scores in the last two minutes of the half left the Tribe a little bewildered and down 34-14.

Roosevelt would come out in the second half and add another score early and Scappoose trailed by four touchdowns. The Indians finally found a way to rally and would end up within a touchdown in a 48-41 loss.

Although the comeback fell short, Scappoose took some positives out of the contest.

“There were definitely some things we could build on,” Scappoose Coach Sean McNabb said. “We made a lot of mistakes and have some things to fix as well. Still, being down 42-14 and coming back to chip away says a lot about our guys. Offensively we had over 400 yards of offense.”

McNabb said Roosevelt’s quickness was hard to combat at times.

“Defensively, we got hurt on the perimeter run. If we don’t fix that we are going to have a hard time stopping teams that run the ball well. We have to get more physical on defense and start getting off our blocks and tackling. We have to be able to do that on both sides of the ball.”

Things did not go well for Scappoose at the start. The Indians gave up an interception on their first possession and Roosevelt’s Damaila Spires scampered 36 yards for the score. The Indians fumbled away their next possession and quarterback Kimane Domena went 30 yards on one play and two plays later he went five yards for the touchdown.

Scappoose finally got moving on a 14-play drive for a score. Carson Davison took the ball over from six yards out. Roosevelt responded with a drive for a score on an 18-yard pass, and the two clubs exchanged possessions. Davison would complete another Scappoose drive for their second touchdown and quarterback Taylor Loss hit Paul Revis for the two-point conversion. Scappoose was down 21-14.

In the last two minutes of the half, Roosevelt came back with a run for a score and then a pick-6, an interception for another score. They led 34-14 by halftime.

While Roosevelt got another score in the third period, the Indians finally righted the ship. Runs of 6, 3, and 5 yards for touchdowns by Revis did a lot to close the gap. Roosevelt had a kickoff return for their last touchdown of the contest, and Scappoose responded with a 58-yard pass from Loss to Revis.

“We had a chance to win that game,” McNabb said. “We were a little unsure going into the game, but once we found out we could play with those guys we made a comeback. We haven’t played a team with that many athletes in a long time. Offensively, we turned the ball over, threw an interception for a TD, gave up a kickoff return for a touchdown. It was a series of mistakes that a team like that will exploit.”

Roosevelt has improved tremendously in the last few years. They were a 4A independent team the last couple of years, but have moved back up to the 5A ranks this season.

McNabb found some highlights among his athletes in the game. Paul Revis scored four touchdowns, three rushing and one on a pass, plus had a two-point reception on a conversion. He rushed 14 times for 98 yards and caught 11 passes for 144. Carson Davison had 24 rushes for 125 yards and scored twice. Quarterback Taylor Loss completed 22 of 35 passes for 213 yards. The Indians were nearly equal in rushing and passing.

“Revis played really well. Matt Blaser and Kenny Bell played well (on defense), Nick Rust and David Krupsky had some receptions. Carson Davison rushed the ball well. Kyle Kramer made some nice receptions. Taylor Loss had not played a lot and for his first varsity action did some good things, too,” McNabb noted.

“We had some first year starters and the kids felt unsure. They didn’t have a lot of confidence. In the first half we really struggled. In the second half, we played football. We didn’t run things the way we wanted to do in the first half. In the second half we really tired Roosevelt out when we picked it up and that’s what we’re trying to do on offense. We dug such a big hole we were not able to win that game. Every game is a learning experience and we found some things we can build off of and things we can learn,” he said.

Tribe at Estacada Friday

The Indians will face a bit different team this week when they travel to Estacada.

“Estacada is a double wing team,” McNabb said. They run the football well and that’s what they are trying to do—establish the run game, keep the ball out of their opponent’s hands, and eat the clock.”

Estacada beat Taft 21-0 last week.

“I feel like offensively we have some guys that can score. We are pretty balanced between the run and the pass. We move Paul Revis all over the place and have other guys that can take the pressure off him. Kramer is a good receiver, Davison proved he can run the ball. Rust and David Krupsky can make some catches. Zach Fry may be able to help us at running back, he’s just lacking a knowledge of the game.

“We’ve got guys than can make things happen. What we want to do offensively is score a lot of points,” McNabb said.

That quick scoring ability could help them against a team like Estacada.

“Estacada is big up front and have backs that run hard,” McNabb said.
