Scappoose beat Yamhill-Carlton, loses to Astoria and Tillamook

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - Scappoose's Phlycia Haigh tips the ball over the net during Monday's volleyball match with Tillamook. The Scappoose Lady Indians had some good moments over the last week, but lost two of their three volleyball matches.

The Lady Indians started last week with a win over Yamhill-Carlton, 25-15, 25-18, 25-20. They were 86 percent serving.

Coach Mark Sprenger said they had to improve that mark if they are to compete with against the three league teams in the top 10.

That proved prophetic on Thursday as they hit just 81 percent serving in a loss to Astoria, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18.

“We did not play well tonight,” Sprenger said of the match. “We certainly did not play as a team. We had breakdowns in several areas, especially serving and hitting. I give Astoria a lot of credit defensively, but we need to continue to improve.”

Scappoose would give Tillamook a battle in their first game on Monday, but couldn’t keep pace in the last two, losing 25-23, 25-13, and 25-18.

Scappoose has just four games left in league play. They are currently in fourth place, a game behind Tillamook and Astoria.
