St. Helens loses two close games, and wins one OT contest

Cody Galvin banked in a three-point shot at the buzzer to send the St. Helens Lions into OT against Evergreen at the Barlow Trail Classic tournament, and the Lions went on to post a win.

The game was the last of three at the tournament for St. Helens and their only win. They lost to Westview in the opener, sinking only two field goals in the first half and narrowly lost to Skyview in the second game.

The Lions trailed Evergreen through the first half, and were down by 11 going into the third. A 23-9 run in the third put them ahead, but they fell behind again leading to Galvin’s game-tying shot. The Lions had a 9-6 advantage in overtime.

Galvin led the way in the contest with 16, while Nathan Hunter was also in double figures with 14. Jared Bonney had to exit the contest in the first half with a sore ankle.

A day earlier, it was a similar story, but for Skyview. They only scored two points in the first quarter and were behind the Lions at the break. An 18-11 run in the third put them ahead. The Lions had a one-point advantage in the final frame, but finished three points down.

Corey West led St. Helens with 11, while Tanner Long had 10.

The Lions moved to 6-4 on the season and 18th in the power rankings. However, the records for Skyview and Evergreen had not yet been entered.

St. Helens spent the rest of the holiday break getting ready for the start of league this past Tuesday at Liberty. They will host Sherwood on Friday, Jan. 11. On Jan. 15, they host Milwaukie and Jan. 18 head to Wilsonville.
