Lions will send 10 individual swimmers in five events to state

by: PARKER LEE - St. Helens' Brook Hopkins competes in the 200 individual medley during last Saturday's NWOC district swim finals. Hopkins was one of 10 Lions to qualify for the state swim meet this Friday and Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College. The St. Helens High swim teams exceeded even their coaches expectations at the district swim meet Friday and Saturday at Parkrose High School.

The Lady Lions were a strong second place, less than 20 points behind favored Sandy, while the boys were fourth, just five points out of first. Four teams were in within those five points. Parkrose edged a heavily-favored Sherwood team by a point.

“They said they’ve never seen anything like that,” St. Helens Coach Bill Rash said of the tightness of the boys’ district title finish.

It was a banner day for the Lions, Rash said, “I didn’t expect to have that many kids qualify for state. It’s more than we’ve ever sent.”

What the Lions and Lady Lions did was qualify three relay teams—the boys’ 200 medley relay and both the boys and girls 400 freestyle relay teams. Plus, St. Helens’ Andrew Collson qualified in both the 50 free and the 100 free.

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens' Andrew Collson qualified for state in four events: the 100 free, 50 free, 200 medley relay, and 400 free relay. Collson, a junior, was second in the 50 free by just two-hundredths of a second. He won the 100 free by three one-hundredths.

The next best individual finish was a second-place by by sophomore Brook Hopkins in the 200 individual medley. Her time, however, wasn’t quite good enough to send her to state in that event.

The boys qualified their medley relay team, even with a third-place finish. Cameron Lein, Jacob Zartman, Johnathan Prevish and Collson were on that team. The boys also qualified with their third-place 400 free relay team of Collson, Jared Houghtelling, Lein, and Devon Brady.

The girls 400 relay team was second and qualified. The team consisted of Patience Marshall, Hopkins, Jackie Prevish, and Emily Spears.

Other notable swims included: third-place by Marshall in the 100 fly and 500 free; a third by Jackie Prevish in the 100 breast; a third by Brady in the 100 free; a third by Lein in the 100 back.

The 5A state swim meet starts at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Hood Community College. Finals begin at the same time on Saturday.
