Scappoose qualifies for 4A state playoffs in Creswell

The Scappoose Indians blew away the field to wrap up the Cowapa League District Golf Tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

The win by 29 strokes over Seaside, qualified the Tribe as a team for the 4A state tournament this coming Monday and Tuesday at the Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell.

The Indians had a lead, but not a commanding one after the first day at the Alderbrook Golf Course in Tillamook. They shot a 354 to give them a seven-stroke advantage over Tillamook. Nick Nguyen and Alex Lukinbeal shot an 85 and 87, respectively to lead the Tribe.

The following day at the Gearhart Golf Links, Scappoose took control early and were well in front after the front nine.

Justin Olbrich led the Indians with a par 36, while Alex Lukinbeal and Nguyen had 38s. The team finished strong, posting a 361. Lukinbeal shot a 79, Nguyen an 81, Justin Olbrich an 82, Taylor Thomas an 89, and Tyler Lukinbeal a 91.

Alex Lukinbeal and Nguyen finished tied for second overall with two-day totals of 166. Olbrich finished in a tie for fifth with a 173. The three qualified for the all-district and all-league teams. Ray Phillpi of Banks was the tournament medalist with a 159.

Coach Steven Hagen was pleased with the effort at district and thinks they have possibilities at state. “I think we have a good chance to do well. From the scores I’ve seen from other 4-A schools, we should have a very good chance of winning a trophy.” he said.

Tribe wins Seaside tourney

The Indians came away with a victory in the Seaside Invitational on Monday, April 29. The tournament was held at the Gearhart Golf Links. The Indians bested a nine-team field including Astoria, Banks, Molalla, Newport, Seaside, Taft, Tillamook and The Dalles. They shot a total of 350 to beat Seaside by five and Banks by eight. The Indians were led by Alex Lukinbeal with a score of 80, followed by Tyler Lukinbeal 88, Justin Olbrich 90, Taylor Thomas 92 and Braxton Sue 100.
