by: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens' Nate Reed took fourth place in the discus, and eighth in the javelin, despite a sore arm at the 5A state track meet. The St. Helens Lions did about as well as expected, even a little better, at the 5A state track meet last weekend in Eugene.

Top performer for the Lions was Nate Reed who took a fourth in the discus, and eighth in the javelin. Reed was just a few inches off his best discus throw of the season, recorded at district the week before.

Still, he aggravated an injury and that would hurt him in the javelin the next day. He showed up with his throwing arm wrapped up. If he’d been able to throw as he had at district (182-feet, 2-inches) he would have finished third and close to second. Instead, despite a valiant effort he finished eighth.

“Nate had a sore arm, an injury he has had the last few weeks but has been getting worse. The discus does not hurt it, just javelin. I thought he threw well despite being in pain. Eighth place is pretty good,” St. Helens coach Gerry Tinkle said.

All in all, Tinkle was pleased with the efforts of the few athletes the squad sent to state this year.

“We scored in every event we were entered except theby: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens' Thomas Hughes took fifth in the high hurdles and sixth in the intermediate hurdles at the state meet on Saturday. by: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens' Kendrick Alvarez took sixth in the high hurdles and seventh in the intermediate hurdles at the 5A state meet on Saturday in Eugene.800m,” Tinkle said. Thomas (Hughes) and Kendrick (Alvarez) both placed in both hurdle events. That has not happened since I have been here (30 years).”

“Kylie (Reinholdt) responded well to pressure” Tinkle added. “Both the (long jump) and (triple jump) were very close competitions. Patience (Marshall) ran a good race, but it was a little too fast for her. She gained valuable experience and should do well next year.”Marshall is a junior.
