Team tops Sprague, but falters against Milwaukie

The St. Helens Lady Lions picked up their second win of the season last week, topping Sprague, 51-44, but then opened Northwest Oregon Conference play Friday with a loss to Milwaukie.

The Lady Lions were fairly even with Sprague for the first three quarters, trailing or leading by no more than three. They went into the last period leading by just one point. A three by Haley Twilleager put St. Helens ahead, but Sprague answered with a three of their own. Michelle Sass added a deuce to put St. Helens up by one. Jillian Ross would add three free throws and a bucket down the stretch, while Sass would score once more as St. Helens pulled away. Ross led St. Helens in scoring with 11.

St. Helens never got into the game with Milwaukie. The Mustangs hit three treys and scored 17 points in the first period on their way to a 17-6 lead. It got worse for St. Helens in the second period. They scored just one point and trailed 30-17 at the half. The Lady Lions did close the gap in the fourth period with 17 points. Gabby Susee was in double figures with 13 for St. Helens.

The Lady Lions were at Wilsonville on Tuesday for another NWOC game and Friday they host Parkrose in their first league home game.
