The Bowmen are too much for St. Helens down the stretch

As the wrestling season nears its end and wrestlers start to peak for the upcoming district, regional and state championships, the goal heading into the final few wrestling duals for St. Helens has shifted, focusing on being prepared rather than putting all the marbles on winning each dual.

Even with that in mind, the Lions had several impressive performances in their dual with Sherwood on Feb. 12, winning five matches and giving the Bowmen a scare before fading down the stretch to lose 50-30 in their penultimate dual of the season.

St. Helens got off to a lighting quick start. Tyler Cooper won his match at 106 in just 56 seconds, pinning Brandon Cole of Sherwood to get a quick six points. Haidon Allen followed with another win by fall over Dylan Cole of Sherwood in the middle of the second round to put the Lions up 12-0.

The Lions were without Cody Jackson at 126 pounds, who will likely rest the remainder of the season in preparation for the conference championships on Feb. 21. St. Helens lost the match at 120 by technical fall, and went on to see the next four wrestlers pinned to give Sherwood a 29-12 lead.

St. Helens, though, wasn't about to fold. Freshmen sensation Myles Terry won by fall over Sherwood's Reilly Heckenberg in 1:21, and Nick Richardson picked up a third-round pin over Stephon Layna at 160 pounds to pull the Lions within five points at 29-14.

That would be the last gasp for St. Helens. Bowmen 170 pounder Andrew Rice won a 4-2 decision over Zilen Nichols to give Sherwood an eight point edge, followed by three straight wins by fall at 182, 195 and 220 for the Bowmen, who forfeited at heavyweight.

The Lions competed in their final dual of the season on Thursday, Feb. 13, but the event was past the press deadline. Their last scheduled action of the season will be the Northwest Oregon Conference championships on Feb. 21 and 22 at Wilsonville High School.
