Senior Lexi Courtney knocks a three-run homer out of the park, breaking a close game wide open

By the time the top of the third inning rolled around, the Indians weren't having exactly the softball season opener they'd hoped for. Only one runner had managed to get on base, home-run threat Lexi Courtney was thrown out in the second inning and North Marion picked up an early lead in the bottom of the second.

The third inning, though, was when the Indians picked up the pace. Julia Ferguson sent the ball to center field, batting home Shelbie Butler and Lacey Updike, and then it was Courtney's turn. With Ferguson waiting on second and Jessica Dykes sitting at first, Courtney connected on the second pitch and connected with authority, sending it over the fence for her first home run of the year.

Ferguson got things rolling once again in the fourth inning, reaching first base on an error by the Husky second-baseman, and allowing Nicole Lukinbeal and Sage Harrison to score.

North Marion picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Indians tacked on another in the top of the seventh when Lukinbeal batted Courtney home to give Scappoose an 8-3 edge.

Updike, who returns as the team's top pitcher, struck out five batters, allowing six hits and walking five in the win.

The Indians will open up their home schedule on March 18 against Molalla at 4:30 p.m.
