What is this 5A Special District 1?
We're in the Northwest Oregon Conference, but what is the Class 5A Special District 1?
Let's try to clear up this question!
Under the latest round of Oregon School Activities Association reclassification and subsequent realignment of schools, St. Helens and Scappoose find themselves reunited in an eight-team Northwest Oregon Conference — with Scappoose moving up from 4A.
The league will include La Salle, Hillsboro, Milwaukie, Parkrose, Putnam, St. Helens, Scappoose and Wilsonville.
Hood River Valley and Pendleton join the new, special 5A SD1 as well for football only. And other schools are in the 5A SD1 for football, by their choice. Taking the option to play down from the 6A ranks in football are Portland Interscholastic League members Benson, Cleveland and Wilson, and Pacific Conference member Forest Grove.
Football will have three 5A Special Districts in 2018, and those districts will have the following playoff bracket allocations:
Special District 1 (14 teams): 6 berths
Special District 2 (12 teams): 5 berths
Special District 3 (10 teams): 5 berths
Special Districts 1 and 2 will have a playoff scenario on Oct. 26 to determine their playoff berths, while Special District 3 will rely on regular-season play and rankings.
After playing in West and East Divisions during the regular season, the top two teams in each 5A SD1 division will earn automatic berths into the state playoffs.
The No. 3 team in each division will play the No. 4 team in the opposite division, with the winners of those games earning the Special District's fifth and sixth seeds.
The remaining teams (including the top two teams in each division) will match up with their counterparts in the other division: 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, 5 vs. 5, down to 7 vs. 7.
