The Scappoose boys place third and the St. Helens boys take fifth at Blue Lake Park

PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP PHOTO: JIM BESEDA - The Scappoose and St. Helens girls cross country teams squared off against each other and the rest of the Northwest Oregon Conference at Blue Lake Park on Wednesday.The Northwest Oregon Conference preview meet took place Wednesday afternoon at Blue Lake Park where both the NWOC boys and girls cross country teams competed in their first big event of the season.

Wilsonville was the victor on the boys side with 34 points and six of its runners finishing in the top 12.

The Scappoose boys had a good showing in their first meet at the Class 5A level as they came in third with 92 points. St. Helens placed fifth with 121 points at the eight-team meet.

Individually, Parkrose's Ahmed Ibrahim blew the pack away by winning the race with a time of 16:06.9 — more than a minute faster than second-place finisher Jack Burns from Wilsonville.

Waylon Nichols was the top performer on the day for St. Helens, finishing in fourth place at 17:38.89.

St. Helens' next closest competitor was Isaiah Ebert, finishing in 24th at 19:47.14. Even Garrison wasn't far behind at 19:56.99, which was good for 27th. Cash Lapping also finished towards the middle of the pack in 32nd place at 20:17.49.

Freshmen Rowen and Luke Suchoski were the top dogs for Scappoose as the two teammates battled neck-and-neck for the whole race. Rowen Suchoski finished in eighth at 8:11.19, just before Luke Suchoski crossed the line at 8:12.00. Gustavo Villalvazo was able to get in the top 20 in 18th at 18:59.62, and Jordan Buchanan placed 29th at 20:12.22.

Scappoose also had a solid showing from the girls team as they placed fourth on Wednesday with 90 points. Anne Mourd took 18th at 24:45.55, while Audrey Demeaux got 25th at 27:06.72. Kylee Plank finished close behind at 27:10.11, which was good enough for 26th.

Hannah Hayduk got the best time for St. Helens at 23:26.32, placing 14th. Kaitlyn Silva got 16th at 24:14.31.

Wilsonville's Samantha Prusse was the only girl to run under the 20-minute mark as her time of 19:55.57 gave her a first-place finish and helped her team to victory as well.

Scappoose's next meet will be at the Oregon City XC Invitational on Saturday, September 15. St, Helens will compete again on Wednesday, September 19 in a dual meet at Parkrose High School with Hillsboro and Putnam.
