When TriMet’s fall schedule goes into effect Sept. 1, bus riders will see $2.1 million in minor changes and a new bus line between Sherwood and Tigard. Even small adjustments can bring benefits – and increased ridership. That’s what TriMet officials said they saw when they streamlined some bus service last September.

With this year’s fall service change, 11 bus lines will see adjustments made to schedules, routes and/or stops across the Portland area. The changes, including the new bus line between Sherwood and Tigard, will help relieve overcrowding and improve schedule reliability, TriMet officials report.

“TriMet’s focus is on improving service for riders where and whenever possible,” said TriMet General Manager Neil McFarlane. “We are excited to be adding service and making small improvements now with our aim toward restoring frequent bus service in the future.”

In September 2012 TriMet streamlined some bus routes. These minor adjustments improved service frequency to some underserved areas, TriMet said, as well as providing a simpler route that was easier to understand.

Ridership jumped anywhere from 29 to 39 percent based on minor changes in 2012.

In April, TriMet announced it was considering making some imporvements to Tigard and Sherwood area buslines.

Here’s what will happen locally:

Line 93-Tigard/Sherwood: Effective Sept. 1, TriMet will begin its new Line 93, which will run between Sherwood and the Tigard Transit Center. It will serve all stops and run weekdays and weekends.

Line 94-Highway 99W/Sherwood: Also on Sept. 1, Line 94 will run weekdays between Sherwood and downtown Portland from approximately 5:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The line will no longer serve Tigard Transit Center and will no longer run weekends. For weekend service between Sherwood and the Tigard Transit Center, customers must take the new Line 93-Tigard/Sherwood route.

Line 12-Barbur to Sandy Boulevard: This line will increase evening frequency on the weekends to help relieve overcrowding.
