This year, the Give n’ Gobble, Sherwood’s Thanksgiving Day run/walk and community food drive, will celebrate the seventh year of an annual event that benefits Sherwood’s Helping Hands food bank.

Last year, more than 2,000 attendees participated in the event (set this year for Nov. 28), which begins at Sherwood High School at 9 a.m.

A perfect start to a day of giving thanks, this celebration has become Sherwood’s most popular holiday tradition as friends and neighbors get together for a healthy run, walk or waddle, that helps put an end to hunger locally.

This year also marks the third year of donations raised from the Give n’ Gobble to benefit Helping Hands’ “Backpacks for Kids Program,” which provides nutritious meals to kids at all four Sherwood elementary schools who may not have access to food at home.

For these children, often the only meal they get is from the free or reduced meal program at school. With “Backpacks for Kids” they receive a backpack of food to help them get through the weekend.

“The Give n’ Gobble is critical for the continued success in our local food bank,” said Sherwood Mayor Bill Middleton who ran in the Give n’ Gobble last year. “I also like the fact that it gets citizens involved from the community to just have fun.”
