After years of planning, work on community center finally begins

by: COURTESY CITY OF SHERWOOD - Here's an architectural rendering of what the front of the new Sherwood Cultural Arts Community Center will look like. The public is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony for the planned Sherwood Cultural Arts Community Center set for Jan. 10 at 4 p.m. The ceremony will take place in the vacant lot across the street from Cannery Square Plaza.

The site is the location of a former machine shop, which initially was going to be the home of the new center. However, structural deficiencies involving some of the building’s trusses resulted in the building being torn down last April.

New plans from Ankrom Moisan architects show that the new $4 million building will have an L-shaped design to it instead of being placed in the square machine shop building.

The new facility will include a main multi-purpose space with retractable telescoping seating with space for up to 400 people The arts center will include classroom and retail space as well.

The portion of the building facing Pine Street will be built of brick, but not all of the structure will contain brick because of cost constraints.
