The women were visiting a relative in Sherwood

Two Seattle cousins were seriously injured Friday evening, one critically, following a two-vehicle crash on Tonquin Road near Morgan Road in rural Sherwood.

Washington County sheriff’s deputies reported that a 1989 Honda Civic driven by Morgan McFarland, 25, was driving eastbound when Morgan McFarland apparently failed to negotiate a sweeping left curve, lost traction and slid sideways into the path of a 1999 Dodge Durango traveling westbound.

The accident caused significant damage to the passenger side of the Civic as well as front damage to the Durango, according to Sgt. Bob Ray of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. Both Morgan McFarland and her cousin, Leah McFarland, 17, a passenger in the vehicle, were taken to local hospitals by ambulances. Morgan’s condition was listed as critical and Leah’s condition was unknown at the time.

The driver of the Durango, Jorge Fausto-Gutierrez, 33 of Forest Grove was not injured.

Deputies believe that speed was a factor in the crash and members of the Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team are assisting with the investigation, said Ray. The road was closed about seven hours for the investigation.
