Joint purchasing power will be used to highlight, prevent use of toxics

The city of Portland and Multnomah County intend to jointly adopt a new Healthy Purchasing Initiative.

The policy will ask companies that supply products and services to both local governments to disclose information about the hazardous chemical contents of their products.

The two governments propose to collaborate in developing the Health Purchasing Initiative, sharing expertise to guide future purchasing decisions and leverage their combined purchasing power. The county’s Purchasing Division will work to identify priority products, develop a chemical disclosure form and work with vendors and manufacturers to identify products that might help avoid usage of chemicals of concern.

Portland City Council expects to adopt the policy on Sept. 19, while the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners will follow suit on Sept. 20.
