Portlanders will get the city’s first BottleDrop Redemption Center, an alternative to dropping off deposit beverage containers at the local grocery store.

The 6,500-square-foot facility will open Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 12403 N.E. Glisan St.

Operated by the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative, the BottleDrop will allow people to drop off containers three different ways.

They can bring bags of up to 50 containers to the facility’s eight staff members, who will count them while customers wait.

There’s also a self-serve option, with vending machines that promise to be better-maintained than the ones typically found at grocery stores.

Regulars also can get pre-labeled bags and drop them off 24 hours a day, with the cash value to be credited to their accounts.

The facility will be open every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
