SAGE, a Portland nonprofit, stands for Senior Advocates for Generational Equity. The award was presented in front of 200 people at the World Forestry Center.

The Roys are known as the Portland area's leading environmental "power couple."

Jeanne Roy crusaded to get the city of Portland to ban polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam, back in 1989. Four years later, Dick quite his job at the Stoel Rives law firm, to join his wife as a fulltime volunteer in the community, mostly pursuing environmental projects.

Between them, the Roys have helped create several enduring environmental and other groups, including the Center for Earth Leadership, the Northwest Earth Institute, the Oregon Natural Step Network, Recycling Advocates, the Master Recycler Program, Eco-School Awards, Lawyers for a Sustainable Future, and Chess for Success.
