Bike share service celebrates second year of operations in close-in Portland neighborhoods.

TRIBUNE FILE PHOTO  - A Biketown employee returns a bike to a designated rack. Biketown, the bike share franchise for Portland, reported a 24 percent increase in ridership the past 12 months, as it celebrated its two-year anniversary on July 19.

The service provides short-term rentals of 1,000 orange-colored bikes parked in designated racks throughout Portland's close-in neighborhoods. It now has 4,812 annual members, and reported serving 144,000 total riders, taking 700,464 rides, since the system launched on July 19, 2016. Biketown riders have ridden some 1,425,000 miles in that span.

A survey last summer, during July and August 2017, found that 28 percent of Biketown trips replaced automobile trips, evidence the program is reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

This June, Biketown expanded its service area eastward out to 53rd Avenue. It also started allowing customers to lock bikes to any public bike rack in the service area at no additional cost. That's in keeping with the trend in other city bike share programs, where bikes no longer have to be returned to designated racks after people are done renting them.

The Biketown for All program, which offers reduced membership fees for low-income Portland residents, now has 354 members, who average about 100 trips a year.

The service also added adaptive bikes for riders with disabilities.

Biketown is owned by Motivate, and sponsored by Nike. Lyft, the Bay area app-based ride service company, recently struck a deal to acquire Motivate, the dominant bike-share company in the United States.
