If elected, mayor will serve another two-year term while councilors will serve another four

Sandy’s mayor and three City Council members all are running unopposed in the 2014 election.

Mayor Bill King; Jeremy Pietzold, council position 1; Lois Coleman, position 2; and Carl Exner, position 5, will stay in office if they are re-elected in the November general election.

City Manager Seth Atkinson said candidates run unopposed every so often. Although in the past several people come in to pick up election packets, throughout the process of getting signatures potential candidates dwindle.

Possibly a mixture of cost and commitment become small barriers for running, Atkinson said, but the true motivating factor behind the lack of candidates is unknown.

The incumbents are already talking about their plans for their next terms in office.

King said, “I will try to continue to make the city more business friendly, and to continue looking for ways to do more for our community with the limited resources we have.”

Exner echoed this, saying, “This is one area that sadly has been the most difficult to correct. I will continue to push the city toward a cooperative environment, but I intend to be much stronger in this regard.”

Exner said he plans to run on a slightly modified direction this year and also will advocate for revitalization of downtown Sandy, bringing businesses into the city that provide living wages.

Coleman plans to promote fiscal responsibility and continue “to promote streamlining processes, and strengthen the city’s fiscal reserves.”

Pietzold was unavailable for comment at publication time.

Council members will serve another four-year term and the mayor will serve another two-year term if re-elected.

The voters’ pamphlet will be mailed early to mid-October and local ballots will arrive between Oct. 16 and 19. Ballot drop sites open Oct. 15. Election day is Nov. 4, and ballots must be returned by 8 p.m.
