Devil comes down to Sandy, Oregon, in Conor McPherson's Irish tale of retribution, high stakes

POST PHOTO: BRITTANY ALLEN - Sharky (James Bass) looks on in terror as Mr. Lockhart (Howard Bickle, Jr.) describes what hell is like. As September begins to wane, many children are already dreaming of the tricks and treats to come in October. Wolf Pack Theater plans a thrilling evening for parents to enjoy with its Halloween production of Conor McPherson's "The Seafarer" at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28. The production will run through Sunday, Oct. 29, with evening shows at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and a matinee at 3 p.m. Sunday.

"The supernatural quality in the show has a very Halloween feel to it," theater owner and thespian Howard Bickle, Jr. said. "It's not a mystery like Hitchcock, but it has its surprises."

Though most of the play is fairly dark, Bickle does assure that theater-goers will leave with some resolution.

"It is similar to 'Chapter Two' in that, for all the drama in the show, it does end on a light note," Bickle explained.

"The Seafarer" is a dynamic-yet-intimate play, fitting well into the cozy space of the 39570 Pioneer Blvd. theater.

The one-set story consists of a card game between four longtime friends and one dark, mysterious stranger, and the stakes are higher than one might expect.

Mr. Lockhart, played by Bickle, is the devil incarnate who comes to Dublin to take Sharky, played by James Bass, down into hell.

Bickle feels that by putting on a more mature play, one full of Irish slurs and slights, he too is upping the stakes.

"The big risk I'm taking with this play is it's definitely for adults," Bickle explained. "I really got lucky with my actors. They're quality actors. All five of (us) have a deep passion for passion, and that kind of energy is invaluable to the creative process."

Tickets are $18 for general admission, $15 for students and seniors, and law enforcement, veterans and firefighters can attend free of charge.

Tickets are available online at or at the door.
