Winterhawks take win into break and Timbers season opener set

The Portland Thorns FC have named two-time Olympic gold medalist Cindy Parlow Cone as their head coach heading into the inaugural season in the eight-team National Women’s Soccer League set to begin play in the spring.

Parlow Cone, 34, played with the U.S. National team from 1996-2004 and finished her international career with 75 goals and 35 assists in 158 matches. She has been an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina for the past six seasons, helping the Tar Heels to national titles in 2009 and 2012.

Timbers open 2013 season vs. Red Bulls

The Portland Timbers will open the 2013 Major League Soccer season at home against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday, March 3. Portland is 2-0 in home openers since joining the MLS in 2011.

The league will announce the full regular-season schedule at a later date.

Winterhawks take win into holiday break

With Mac Carruth stopping 37 shots, the Portland Winterhawks won their holiday break getaway game Tuesday 4-3 over the host Spokane Chiefs.

Nicolas Petan scored twice, giving him 24 goals this season, and Adam De Champlain got the game-winner at 10:40 of the third period before a crowd of 4,619 at Veterans Memorial Arena.

Taylor Peters also scored a goal for the Hawks, who had leads of 1-0, 2-0 and 3-2.

Portland improved to 29-5-1-0 and has a team-record 59 points going into the break.

The Winterhawks, who are five points ahead of Kamloops in their battle for the best mark in the Western Hockey League, are off until Dec. 28, when they play at Tri-City.

Portland has a 12-point lead on second-place Spokane (23-10-1-0) in the U.S. Division.

Troy Rutkowski had two assists on Tuesday for the Winterhawks.

Carruth raised his 2012-13 record to 16-2-0-0.

Portland forwards Keegan Iverson and Dominic Turgeon have been named to the U.S. roster for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge set to be played Dec. 28 through Jan. 4, in Quebec. Iverson has four goals and four assists for the Winterhawks this season, while Turgeon has one goal and two assists.
