The Sandy equestrian team got off to a solid start, piling up 822 points to beat Barlow and Estacada in the big-school division at the season-opening meet last week.

Valerie James led the charge with wins in steer daubing (4.17 seconds), barrel racing (14.51), pole bending (21.1) and breakaway roping (16.62) where she was the only competitor to get a catch. Teammate Billy James won the individual flags race in 8.56 seconds, while Valerie and Billy combined for the fastest time in the Two-Man bi-rangle (25.28).

Natalie Burback also won multiple show events, taking first in Showmanship (87 points), Hunt Seat Equitation (86) and Western Horsemanship (93). Jennifer Knapp won the Hand Trail exercise (90), Mallery Gould was first in Reining (66) and Keith Butts won Saddle Seat Equitation (66.5).

Sandy also picked up a win in team penning where they totaled seven cows over three runs.

Wrestlers complete a perfect dual season

The Sandy High wrestling team finished 7-0 in the Northwest Oregon Conference after a 64-12 win at St. Helens on Thursday night. Sandy’s Richie Rich had the quickest match, flattening his 113-pound opponent in just 28 seconds. The Pioneers also got falls from Rhett Schilperoot (145) and Tyler White (152) to go along with six forfeits.

Jeremy Funk won the closest battle of the night with a 7-4 decision at 195 pounds, securing the victory with a takedown in the last 10 seconds.

Pair of local martial artists win gold

Zack Miller from Firwood Elementary won gold medals in sparring and board breaking to go along with a silver in weapons at the Oregon State Taekwondo Championships earlier this month. Michael Page from Cedar Ridge Middle School won gold in forms and sparring, along with a silver in weapons and a bronze in board breaking.

Sandy girls lose touch in second quarter

The Sandy girls basketball team dropped a 50-22 decision last Tuesday against Wilsonville, falling out of contention after being outscored 18-4 in the second quarter. Kaylee Barnett led the Pioneers with seven points.

Evans scores in Timbers friendly win

Troutdale's Steven Evans, a defender with the Timbers, tallied a goal in today's 3-0 preseason win over FC Tuscon. His goal capped the day's scoring in the 86th minute. After seeing his initial shot blocked, he followed the play and put the rebound into the net. Portland is 3-1-0 in preseason matches.
