Hood-to-Coast underway Saturday

The 32nd running of the Hood-to-Coast relay starts Friday with the first wave of runners leaving Timberline Lodge at 6:30 a.m. and continuing through 6:45 p.m. until all 1,050 teams are on the course.

The 198-mile trek ends travels along Highway 26 with the first team exchange point being at the Safeway in Sandy. The course continues through Boring before taking runners along the Springwater Trail through Gresham and into downtown Portland with steady flow of pounding feet in the late-night hours Friday.

Toyo University won last year’s relay in 17 hours, 14 minutes, 34 seconds.

Tennis team hosts doubles tourney

The Sandy High girls tennis program is hosting an open women’s doubles tournament Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 22-24, on the high school courts. The tourney is open to women within the Oregon Trail Schools district with an entry fee of $12 per player.

Registration is due by Monday, Aug. 19, by calling Greg Thorson at 503-661-8526.

Degner has big day in Challenge opener

Mt. Hood CC baseball player Ryan Degner went 2 for 5 with three runs scored and six RBIs during the NWAACC all-stars 13-6 win over Team Canada to open the World Baseball Challenge tournament Tuesday night in Prince George.

Degner sent a two-run homer over the fence for a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning and added a grand slam to put the game out of reach in the sixth. Saints’ teammate Mychal Harrington connected on an RBI-sac fly in the game, while pitcher Christian Bannister gave up two hits in 1 1/3 innings of shut out relief.

Degner was 0-4 in Wednesday’s 9-7 loss to Chinese Taipei, as a three-run rally in the ninth inning came up just short with the tying run at second base.

The NWAACC all-stars continue the tournament Friday against Japan before facing Cuba on Saturday and getting a rematch with Chinese Taipei on Sunday.

Resort hosts Art Skipper golf tourney

The Resort at the Mountain hosts the Art Skipper Jr. Memorial golf tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. Entry is $100 per golf or $400 for a foursome. The entry includes a cart and admission to the awards barbecue. Tickets for the awards dinner only are also available for $35. Prizes will be awarded for skills competitions such as long drive, closest to the pin and putting.

Proceeds from the event benefit the No Pioneer Left Behind program. The entry deadline is Sept. 1. For more information, call the Sandy High athletic office at 503-668-8011, ext. 7114.

Winterhawks announce Neely Cup games

The Portland Winterhawks report to training camp next week and hit the ice Thursday, Aug. 22, for the intrasquad Neely Cup. Games for the four-team tournament begin at 4 pm. Thursday through Saturday with the championship game set for 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 25. The sessions are held at the Winterhawks Skating Center in Beaverton and are free to the public.

Thorns win finale, finish in third place

The Portland Thorns won their regular-season finale 2-1 at the Seattle Reign FC on Saturday and finished third in the regular season with an 11-6-5 record.

Forward Christine Sinclair scored both Portland goals before an announced sellout crowd of 3,855 at Starfire Sports Complex.

The Thorns overcame a third-minute goal by Seattle forward Megan Rapinoe, with Sinclair scoring answering in the eighth minute and getting the winner in the 83rd to tie for the team lead with eight this season.

The Western New York Flash beat the visiting Boston Breakers 2-1 earlier Saturday to clinch the top spot in the NWSL going into the postseason.

Portland plays at FC Kansas City in the NWSL semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday.
