EUGENE — With their backs against the wall, the Sandy 10U Cal Ripken team showed a lot of guts on Friday afternoon at the regional tournament.

The Pioneers lost their first two games of pool play on Thursday, making it extremely difficult for them to advance. But after beating Meridan (Idaho) 6-5 earlier of Friday, this gritty Sandy team got the job in their deciding second game of the day to advance to the semifinals.

Tied 7-7 in the top of the sixth, the Pioneers rallied for 5 runs in the frame and went on to beat Lynden (Washington) 12-7. Matthew Kosderka led Sandy with four RBI's on the day.

"Our body language was very poor on the first day of the tournament. But for some reason, the boys felt the momentum starting to swing in their direction and they were just up for the whole day," Sandy manager Mike Kosderka said. "I never felt threatened. I thought that we were going to pull this game out the whole time just based on our mental state and the way that we were carrying ourselves."

The Sandy offense jumped all over the Lynden starting pitcher in the first three innings. Matthew Kosderka and Cooper Hibbs hit consecutive RBI singles to put the Pioneers up 2-0 in the first inning. After Lynden responded with two runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2, a two-run single by Brayden Sievertsen and a two-run double by Matthew Kosderka allowed Sandy to retake the lead at 6-2.
