SUMMERFIELD ESTATES - Peter BodleyBefore retirement, you may have spent your time working at your job, or worrying about your kids. But now, it's time to take care of you—which includes caring for your emotional, mental and physical states. The good news is that just a few small changes can dramatically improve your sense of well-being.

As fall approaches, the shortening days, colder weather and rain can contribute to a sense of isolation and depression. It's important to continue getting regular physical activity. While the golf course and swimming pool are big draws at Summerfield Estates during the summer, the club house also offers regular exercise classes, such as yoga or Tai Chi.

Exercise classes have another benefit, which is introducing regular social activity. One of the best ways to make new friends is to meet new people at a similar juncture in their lives. Recurring activities include live music, cookouts, outings to local museums, and educational seminars. If you're feeling a little lonely, check the activities calendar to find events happening morning, noon and night!

Volunteering can also add an important sense of meaning and purpose. As the school year begins, school supply drives for local low-income families become more important than ever. Inquire about Summerfield Estates' service programs. And if you need more help, depression is a medical condition that can be caused by stress, or by a medication's side effects. If you recognize the signs in yourself or others, a doctor's visit can quickly and easily improve your state of mind.
