A Tualatin man was arrested Thursday after police say he killed his dog.

Tualatin police officers responded to a call March 14, at about 1 p.m. at the Rivercrest Meadows Apartments, where a deceased Labrador retriever was discovered in the complex dumpster. Washington County Animal Services confirmed the animal had a chip implant, which allowed them to identify Leroy Jacob Moffitt, 43, as the dog’s owner. Moffitt is a resident of the apartment complex. The dog was determined to have been 13 years old.

During police questioning, Moffitt reportedly told officers he had used a hatchet to kill the dog earlier that day.

The Tualatin Police Department is not releasing information about Moffitt’s motivation at this time.

Moffitt was arrested for first-degree aggravated animal abuse and was lodged in the Washington County Jail.

The Tualatin Police Department reminds pet owners to contact their veterinarian, local animal services or animal shelters if they need assistance with their pets.
