Tualatin City Council eyes joining climate initiative
The Tualatin City Council will hold a work session Monday, July 10, to consider joining the "Climate Mayors" initiative.
The initiative was created by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, former Houston Mayor Annise Parker, and former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter. The effort commits U.S. mayors to working together to strengthen local efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to support efforts for binding federal and global-level policymaking.
The work session will be a discussion only and not a vote.
"I imagine that we'll have a draft resolution that will be discussed on July 10 and then, if they agree, it would be put on a future agenda to adopt," City Manager Sherilyn Lombos said.
The Climate Mayors initiative has gained traction since President Donald Trump announced plans to abandon the Paris climate accord, an agreement of most of the world's nations to reduce emissions.
Oregon cities that have joined the initiative include Portland, Salem, Beaverton, Gladstone and several others.
