Silent film from 1921 will be accompanied by live music; will include cartoons and newsreels of the era.

Tigard's Joy Cinema will screen a classic Charlie Chaplin film on Saturday, March 3, showing "The Kid."Poster for the classic movie.

The 1921 silent film is set for a 9 p.m. showing at the theater, 11959 S.W. Pacific Highway, Tigard.

Less than an hour long, it will be preceded by newsreels and cartoons from 1921.

"The film itself is a super-classic silent comedy where Chaplin's classic character, the Tramp, finds an orphaned baby raises the exceptionally cute and talented little kid in his image," said Ygal Kaufman, who organizes classic film screenings all over Oregon. "All of the footage we'll see is silent and will be accompanied in the theater by the team of Justin Schepige and Kevin Van Walk."

Kaufman said the pair are professional musicians from Corvallis whose daytime jobs are playing in the funk band DTW.

"Van Walk is also the core of the Van Meyers, an influential Willamette Valley experimental music act," he said. "Schepige will be playing a Rhodes piano and a variety of synths while Van Walk accompanies him on a variety of percussion instruments."

The pair played during a screening of the silent classic "Nosferatu" at the Joy Cinema in October, which attracted 150 people, and often accompany silent films as part of Community Movie Night with Ygal Kaufman (also known as CMNYK) and Public Domain Xinema (PDX), screening series that were created and are curated and hosted by Kaufman.

Kaufman is a journalist, filmmaker, actor and film exhibitioner who does live film presentations all over Oregon.
