Local author Eric Lindstrom shares Fanno Creek reflections

Tualatin Riverkeepers invites the public to hear Eric Lindstrom, local nature photographer and author as the guest speaker of the group's annual meeting on Sunday.

Lindstrom will show photos and read from his newly released book, "Up Fanno Creek: Confessions of an Accidental Advocate."

The annual meeting and blue ribbon pie contest will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Winona Grange, 8340 S.W. Seneca St., in Tualatin.

Lindstrom's book chronicles the life and near death of a small urban stream in Portland. In the 1960s, the once flourishing stream was so overcome by agricultural waste, raw sewage and industrial pollutants that it was on the verge of extinction. It also posed a health risk so severe that it helped shut down all residential and commercial development in its area for almost a year. by: SUBMITTED BOOK COVER - Eric L. Lindstrom will speak Sunday during a Tualatin Riverkeepers meeting.

Thanks to the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, and the efforts of a small army of wetland advocates, the creek has recovered significantly from more than a century of mostly unchecked or poorly regulated land-use practices. But the long-term outlook for Fanno Creek's existence is anything but rosy, as Lindstrom quickly learned when he set out to discover his personal watershed address.

"Up Fanno Creek" tells his story as well, and in the process shows what it means to become a watershed advocate, accidentally or otherwise.

The event will also feature an old fashioned pie walk. Pie bakers will compete for your vote for the blue ribbon pie. Attendees sample each pie and vote for their favorite.
