Public invited to two free demonstrations

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware is partnering with internationally renowned Robert Sorby Tools of England to present a unique demonstration on woodturning.

Chris Pouncy, a Robert Sorby woodturning expert, will travel to the Beaverton store on Monday to host two free public demonstrations from 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Rockler Woodworking and Hardware is located at 11773 S.W. Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway.

Woodturning differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Many intricate shapes and designs can be made by turning wood, and this artful form of woodworking has experienced a recent surge in popularity in the United States.

The woodturning demonstration held at Rockler will be a rare opportunity for the general public to hear directly from an internationally acclaimed woodturning expert. All skill levels are welcome.

“We’re thrilled to have a Robert Sorby woodturning expert visit us,” said Rockler store manager, Joe Cornett. “Having a chance to see and learn from a turner of this caliber is a special opportunity.

“Both our staff and our customers are eager to pick up new tips and techniques. And for those who haven’t tried woodturning before, it’s a great opportunity to see what it’s all about.”

According to Cornett, woodturning is a growing hobby. “Access to the specialized tools and supplies needed to get into turning has vastly improved in terms of both availability and cost,” Cornett said. “We’re seeing many more new customers coming in to buy lathes and other turning supplies.

“We’ve responded by increasing our assortments, and we now carry hundreds of turning blanks, hardware, tools and supplies to make everything from bowls to pens.”

As part of the day’s events, the store will offer a 20 percent discount off of all Sorby turning tools.
