Southminster Presbyterian offers annual art show and sale

The Celebration of Creativity Fine Art Exhibit and Sale opens to the public Thursday.

Held annually the first full weekend in March at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Beaverton, the event provides an unmatched showcase for more than 80 established and emerging Northwest artists.

Now celebrating its 36th year, the Celebration of Creativity is noted for its unique displays and the high-quality of work exhibited. The exhibit and sale will feature a variety of ceramics, fiber art, garden art, baskets, glass, jewelry, mixed media, oil, acrylic, pastel, pottery, photography, sculpture, watercolor and wearable art — virtually something for everyone.

The Celebration of Creativity begins with a “First Look Gala” from 7 to 9 p.m. The gala features music by harpist Ellen Lindquist, hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to purchase art and meet some of the artists. This event is open to the public, and admission is $10 at the door with ample, off-street parking available.

On Friday, the exhibit and sale is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free admission. From 7 to 9 p.m., the public is invited to meet the artists and enjoy live jazz music by Blackburn and Duthie. Admission is free for the evening event.

The festivities continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and guests will be treated to classical music throughout the day. Admission is free.

At 10 a.m. Sunday, Southminster Presbyterian Church invites the public to a unique “Worship in the Art” service in the sanctuary, which has been transformed into an art gallery. The exhibit and sale is closed during worship but will resume from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

The Celebration of Creativity has provided money for scholarships and art programs as part of its mission to promote local arts by supporting art education.

The committee recently granted scholarships for three of the 2013 Beaverton Arts Commission’s outstanding high school visual art students. In addition, the committee has supported the Beaverton School District Art Literacy Program at six different schools through their Parent-Teacher Organizations. It also funded scholarships for neighborhood children for a church camp held each summer.

The 36th annual Celebration of Creativity Art Show at Southminster Presbyterian Church is located one mile west of Highway 217 at the corner of Southwest Hall Boulevard and Denney Road in Beaverton. For additional information, call 503-644-2073 or visit
