Horizon Christian boys lose close games against Blanchet Catholic and Irrigon

DAN BROOD - Horizon Christian senior Anthony Sprauer, (35) shown here during a state playoff win over Umatilla, was a second-team Class 3A all-state tournament selection.The Horizon Christian High School boys basketball team battled hard all season, and won a thrilling overtime state playoff game against Umatilla just to make it to the Class 3A state tournament.

And, while the Hawks kept battling hard at the tournament, they weren't quite able to get a win to show for it.

Horizon Christian saw its season come to a close with a pair of closes losses at the state tourney, held last Thursday through Saturday at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay and North Bend High School.

The Hawks opened state tourney play last Thursday with a 48-45 loss to Blanchet Catholic in a closely-contested quarterfinal game played at Marshfield High School.

Blanchet Catholic held a 25-24 halftime lead in that game, and led 34-32 after three quarters before holding on for the victory.

Senior Anthony Sprauer led Horizon Christian in that contest with 22 points on a 9-for-17 shooting night from the field. Sprauer also led the Hawks with five rebounds and he tied senior teammate Brady Egger and junior Will Shelby in assists with two.

Junior Kyle Free sank a pair of 3-point baskets and added nine points for the Hawks. Junior Travis Schiele scored five points.

Mike Bashaw and R.J. Veliz each scored 16 points to lead the way for Blanchet Catholic.

On Friday, Horizon Christian was edged 58-50 by Irrigon in a consolation semifinal game played at North Bend.

Sprauer scored 24 points in that game, on a 9-for-19 shooting night from the field. He also dished out five assists, tying Egger for team-high in that category, and he had three steals.

Egger scored 13 points, and had five steals. Free had six points and seven steals. Shelby led the Hawks in rebounds with six.

Johnny Phillips led Irrigon with 18 points.

With the two state tournament setbacks, Horizon Christian finished its season with a final overall record of 19-10.

De La Salle North Catholic won the Class 3A state championship, besting Dayton 68-55 in Saturday's tourney title game.

Sprauer was a second-team all-tournament selection.
