SMART volunteers needed

To the editor:

I appreciated Rep. Betty Komp’s column about Reach Out and Read in the Nov. 27 Independent (“Thanks to Reach Out and Read volunteers,” Page 4). She’s absolutely right that developing reading skills in children is essential for their success in school and later in life. SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) program volunteers read with children in Woodburn’s schools to help them learn to read and enjoy books.

SMART needs more people who can give an hour a week during the school year to read with one child at a time at one of the elementary schools: Washington, Lincoln or Nellie Muir. Research shows that SMART volunteers make a lasting difference in the lives of children, and if you’d like to help, visit the website or call the Salem office to find out how to get involved: 503-391-8423.
