by: PHIL HAWKINS - Gervais senior Beverlyn Stott attacks the Jefferson defense in the first half of the Cougars 2-0 loss to the Lions Wednesday. Stott took a team-high five shots in the loss, but none found their mark as the Cougars fell to 1-8-1 this season. The Gervais girls soccer team entered last Wednesday’s game against Jefferson with a three-game win streak against the hosting Lions, and were hoping to make it four.

The Jefferson players thought differently, and used a pair of first-half goals to take a 2-0 lead, which they held through a Gervais rally in the second half to split the season series with the Cougars.

The Lions (1-9, 1-9 Special District 3) put the pressure on early, scoring 20 minutes into the game and adding a second seven minutes later to take a commanding lead into halftime.

The Cougars came out on the offensive, taking 11 shots over a 25-minute stretch, but couldn’t connect.

The loss dropped Gervais to 1-8-1 this season with four games remaining in the regular season.

The Cougars travel to Amity (3-6-1, 2-5-1 SD3) Thursday to play the Warriors. The two teams met in September, playing to a 2-2 draw thanks to a goal by Sara De Los Reyes and 10 saves from Gervais goalkeeper Gloria Cantu.
