The North Marion boys cross country team is headed to Eugene for the state championships after placing second last week at the Tri-Valley District meet at McIver Park.

Senior Christian Parr led the Huskies Wednesday with a sixth-place time of 17:03.90. Parr finished behind five members of the La Salle team, which swept the top spots to finish first in the team standings with 15 points.

The Huskies were second with 50 points, after placing five runners in the top 15. After Parr, sophomore Colin Barrow was the next to cross the finish line with an eighth-place mark of 17:40.60 to set a new personal record. He was followed by senior Ben Hanberg, who also set a PR with a time of 17:52.90.

Senior Grant Barrow (18:22.10, 12th) and freshman Ulises Vargas (18:43.10, 15th) also qualified for the boys team.

On the girls side, Hannah Surcamp placed 12th with a time of 22:17.59 in the final race for the senior runner.

The start of the 4A boys state championship race is scheduled for 11:50 a.m. at Lane Community College this Saturday.

The Bulldog boys finished seventh out of eight teams at the Mid-Willamette District Championship race at Lebanon behind the top performances from senior Placido Salvador and freshman Gustavo Lopez.

The two finished back-to-back at Wednesday’s race with Salvador taking 12th in 17:19 followed by Lopez at 13th with a new personal record of 17:22.

Lopez has consistently been improving throughout the season, shaving almost two minutes from his opening-season time of 19:13 at the Ash Creek Invitational in Monmouth. While Salvador has been a steady runner this fall, never finishing outside the top 15, Lopez has been quickly advancing on the senior runner.

“I knew Gustavo was going to catch him, but I didn’t know if he was going to catch him this year,” said coach Tom Lonergan after the race. “He works hard. From the start of the season to the end, he probably improved the most.”

The pair were followed by freshman teammate Alejandro Madrigal (18:23, 36th), who also set a new PR, then by juniors Eddie Bravo (18:36, 39th) and Edgar Lopez (19:05, 46th).

The girls were led by sophomore Marlen Molina’s PR time of 25:12 to finish 50th. Although the Bulldog varsity girls finished with the bottom five times in the league championship, Lonergan appreciated their effort in participating this year and working to get better each week.

“These seven girls, they stuck to it,” he said. “They never ran before in their lives, and they stuck to it.

“Marlen Molina – if she continues to work at it, I think she’s got a pretty good future.”

Molina was followed by sophomore Erika Hernandez (26:50, 51st), junior Maricela Vidal (27:20, 52nd), junior Luz Perfecto (28:28, 53rd) and senior Patricia Gonzalez (29:06, 54th).

Three Buckaroo runners set new personal best times at Wednesday’s district championship event at Bush Pasture Park in Salem.

Freshman Griselda Vargas-Ayala led the girls team with a 20th-place finish in 23:41.2 to shave almost a minute off her previous best time set earlier in the month. She was followed by fellow freshman Ivonne Hernandez (25:03.1, 26th), who also set a new PR.

The boys were led by freshman Adal Izquierdo, who finished 47th in 21:44.7 for a career-best time.
