With a fifth straight win to finish the regular season, the Kennedy football team has momentum on their side as they prepare to host the Oakland Oakers in the first round of the state playoffs Friday night.

The Trojans finished the year ranked No. 7 overall after blowing out four of their last five opponents, including a 53-0 win over Santiam last Friday.

Kennedy took a quarter to get the ball rolling against the Wolverines, after scoring just three points in the first 12 minutes on a field goal by Carl Hesse. But a four-touchdown performance in the second quarter quickly put the game out of hand, and the Trojans cruised to their biggest victory of the season.

Senior Ty Sawyer scored on runs of five and 10 yards in the second, setting the foundation for dominating performance in which he carried the ball 17 times for 119 yards and four touchdowns.

Junior Wyatt Rodriguez added a four-yard run with 56 seconds left in the period, and Kyle Manning returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the half to give the Trojans a 31-0 lead after 24 minutes.

Sawyer added two more scores in the third quarter, and Bishop Mitchell added a 10-yard touchdown run toward the end of the game to round out the Trojans’ scoring effort.

After feasting on the bottom four teams in the Tri-Valley Conference over the past month, the Trojans now face the No. 10 Oakers (8-2, 3-1 Mountain View).

Oakland is coming off a 46-20 victory over Oakridge to snap a two-game losing streak. The two teams last met in 2010 when Kennedy handed Oakland a 48-0 loss in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.

A win for Kennedy would put the team in the quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive year, where they would play the winner of Saturday’s game between No. 2 Regis and Stanfield.

Regis dethroned Kennedy this season to take the Tri-River Championship after beating the Trojans 33-25 in the fourth week of the season. That win by the Rams started a seven-game win streak that they carry into this weekend’s playoffs.
