Hernandez places 5th in girls long jump, Vela advances to 400 finals

PHIL HAWKINS - St. Paul's Jennifer Hernandez placed fifth in the 2A long jump competition, improving on her 12th-place finish at last year's state meet.

The St. Paul senior kicked things off for the Buckaroos on Friday with a trip to the podium.

Hernandez finished just one inch shy of her personal record with a jump of 15-10 to finish in fifth place in the 2A long jump finals.

After fouling on her opening jump of the day, Hernandez hit 15-01.25 on the measuring tape on her second attempt to send her to the finals. There she upped her mark to 15-04.75 on her fouth attempt and pushed her final mark to 15-10 on her fifth attempt.

It was the second trip to the state long jump competition, improving upon her 12th-place finish at last year's event and scoring four points for the Trojans.

Vela finished third in her heat with a time of 1:03.11 to advance to the finals of the 2A 400 on Friday.

The St. Paul sophomore shaved off more than a second from her previous PR she set the week before at the district championships.

Vela is seeded sixth heading into Friday's finals.
