'An Evening With Our Stars' is Oct. 6 at the Oregon Golf Club

by: SUBMITTED - Wilsonvile High School choir Soul'd Out performed on NBC's 'The Sing-Off' last year. They will perform Oct. 6 at the Music and Arts Partners event. The stars will align for one night only in West Linn thanks to Music and Arts Partners (MAP). The organization will host its first “An Evening With Our Stars” extravaganza in a benefit for West Linn-Wilsonville School District music and arts programs from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Oregon Golf Club.

The event will feature a silent auction, dinner and a small oral auction capped off by student entertainment. The night will also feature performances by the winners of the MAP talent search. MAP hopes to raise approximately $20,000 from the event.

“We have been around since 1995 to help bridge the gap with what the school district can’t provide and that gap is growing markedly more this year than ever,” said Suzi Anderson, publicity with MAP.

“We need to step up our fundraiser efforts. School budgets are being cut left and right, and what’s being hit most severely is the music and arts programs,” she said.

MAP raises funds for district-wide arts programs through concession sales and membership drives. The organization uses that money to provide grants and scholarships that fund music, fine arts and performing arts projects throughout the school year.

MAP donated more than $35,000 in grants for the 2011-12 school year, Anderson said. The organization has donated $650,000 to the school district since 1995. “An Evening With Our Stars” is the largest caliber event the organization has hosted to date.

“MAP is the intangible unseen thing,” Anderson said. “People don’t realize when they hear the jazz choir at West Linn High School they probably couldn’t have that program without Music and Arts Partners supporting them — or the strings concerts would not take place unless Music and Arts Partners were there.”

The performance lineup includes West Linn High jazz choir; Stafford Primary’s Calypso Kids; talent show winners Dawson Kennedy, Chloe Voeller and Claire Newrones; West Linn High School band, Rosemont Ridge Middle School select choir, musical numbers from West Linn and Wilsonville high schools drama programs; and a finale by Wilsonville High School’s famed a cappella choir, Soul’d Out.

Student paintings and visual artwork will be exhibited throughout the space and sponsors have paid for approximately 35 arts, band, photography and music teachers to attend the event.

“The focus of the night is to celebrate the amazing accomplishments of our music and arts programs in the schools,” Anderson said. “The night is all about the kids.”

Auction items range from original artwork, a MacBook Pro, tickets for a variety of arts performances, trips to Seattle and California beach houses, dinners and many student volunteer activities including dog washing, tutoring, musical instrument lessons and birthday party planning.

Anderson said the event was made possible by careful planning and orchestration with music and arts teachers and principals from the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. The orchestration they hope will pay off.

“We hope that this is successful and will allow us to make this an annual event,” she said.

The Oregon Golf Club is located at 25700 SW Petes Mountain Road in West Linn. Tickets are $50 each ($24 is tax deductible). All profits benefit local arts programs.
