WLHS junior Oliver Muggli and Roger Woehl will speak

by: SUBMITTED - WLHS junior Oliver Muggli spent two weeks in Tanzania this summer through Bridge to Africa. Traveling primitive roads to remote villages may not be every teenager’s idea of a great summer, but it was for West Linn High School junior Oliver Muggli.

He worked seven years to raise money for impoverished children in Tanzania. This summer, he was able to meet them face-to-face.

In September, Muggli spent two weeks in Tanzania as a part of an Africa Bridge volunteer team. During the trip, he met with government officials, tribal leaders, families and the orphaned children who first inspired him to get involved.

Africa Bridge is a nonprofit organization registered under the Tanzanian Societies Act. Its unique model focuses on the near-term care and long-term welfare of vulnerable children and their guardians.

Africa Bridge works with the communities it serves to design and deliver innovative and collaborative solutions to combat extreme child poverty. In 2011, Muggli became the youngest member of Africa Bridge’s board of directors.

Fellow board member and former West Linn-Wilsonville School District superintendent Roger Woehl said, “Oliver brings the student perspective to the ideas and discussions of planning and strategy. He also is a powerful and respected voice with students at all levels.

“His interest and knowledge will, hopefully, bring Africa Bridge into discussions at the university level as he pursues his education, and certainly as he enters the professional world.”

Muggli and Woehl will speak about their experience in Tanzania during the fundraiser “A School Night Out!” on Nov. 15 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the old library at Marylhurst University.

The event will feature appetizers, drinks and a raffle and silent auction in support of Africa Bridge’s work in Tanzania. Cocktail tire is recommended. Tickets are $60.

Marylhurst University is located at 17600 Pacific Highway 43. For more information, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or visit
