TanHappy Thanksgiving! I am thankful to be part of a productive city council and to represent the amazing people in our West Linn community. As 2013 winds down, I reflect on our accomplishments from this past year and look forward to setting new goals in 2014 that will make West Linn a great place for businesses and families.

Our community in West Linn is one that cares about others and gives to those in need. One way you can tell this is through the work done by the West Linn Food Pantry. The West Linn Food Pantry is located inside the Willamette United Methodist Church, and it served 1,087 families in 2012. The food pantry is run without any paid staff and it operates entirely on donations. Volunteer hours and donations are always appreciated.

During the holiday season the West Linn Food Pantry is very active in providing emergency food, holiday food and gifts for children in need. During the holidays last year, 210 families received assistance in the form of food boxes and gifts for children.

The business community and citizens really increase their contributions during the holiday season. For example, local stores donate frozen turkeys and Miffy’s Marvelous Muffins donates muffin mixes. Entire streets in West Linn coordinate neighborhood events to donate food items packed in decorated boxes. A local home-based business owner hosts an open house bazaar for other local home-based businesses to sell their products. Ten percent of all their sales from the bazaar are given to the West Linn Food Pantry. Volunteers step up to pick up frozen turkeys from local businesses and package holiday food boxes at the food pantry, then volunteers deliver the boxes to families in need.

On Dec. 14, at the annual city of West Linn holiday parade, there will be a toy drive.

These toys are delivered to the West Linn Food Pantry so pantry participants shop for presents for loved ones.

The West Linn Food Pantry is truly a wonderful part of our community and it is helped by some of our amazing business owners and community members. If you are interested in giving a donation to or volunteering for the West Linn Food Pantry, please visit their website at
