The Lions put up fast times in a very competitive meet

by: VERN UYETAKE - Brie Balsbough takes a breath en route to her victory in the 100 butterfly against Lakeridge last week.The West Linn swim teams squared off against league powerhouse Lakeridge last week and fared well, but ultimately fell the to the Pacers.

The Lakeridge girls won 96-74 while the Pacer boys won 99-71.

The West Linn girls fell behind early but made up some ground with their depth. In the 200 individual medley, Laura Laderoute and Sarah Cooper took second and third respectively while Robin and Sidney Pinger did the same in the 50 freestyle.

The Lions scored their first win of the evening in the 100 butterfly with Brie Balsbough cruising to a nearly six second victory in 1:03.97.

Sidney Pinger and Kylie Norris then took second and third in the 100 freestyle and Lauren Cramer and Sara Frank did the sam in the 500 freestyle.

West Linn earned an impressive victory in the 200 freestyle relay, led by the team of Laderoute, Norris, Sidney Pinger and Balsbough, topping Lakeridge's team by more than eight seconds.

Laderoute and Cooper would go 2-3 again in the backstroke while the Lions' most impressive showing came in the breaststroke.

Baslbough scored her second win of the competition in 1:07.06 while Robin Pinger took second.

For the boys, West Linn kicked off the meet on a positive note with the 200 medley relay team of Ryan O'Leary, Curtis Klein, Justus Highbarge and Ian Herr winning in a time of 1:50.12.

Curtis Klein then scored a dominating win in the 200 IM, taking it in 2:02.64 by more than 15 seconds.

O'Leary and Herr took second and third in the 50 freestyle while Highbarger scored a lopsided win in the 100 butterfly with his best time of the year.

Klein won his second event of the night in the 500 freestyle but the 200 freestyle relay team lost a close competition to the Pacers' squad.

In the 100 breaststroke, Kyle Vu won by more than two seconds for the Lions.

The road in league doesn't get any easier for West Linn which will take on Lake Oswego this afternoon (Thursday) at the Lake Oswego pool.
