Transit agency worked directly with company as it moved from Beaverton

by: JOSH KULLA - SMART already provides a 2X service to Barbur Boulevard in Portland. It recently announced it will expand the number of times that route will be offered during the week.In response to increased demand for transit services outside normal operating schedules, Wilsonville’s Transit Department, South Metro Area Regional Transit (SMART), has expanded its bus transit service.

With approximately 1,200 employees new to Wilsonville, international call-center Stream Global Services worked with SMART to facilitate the company’s relocation from Beaverton to Wilsonville.

“We have an increased number of local business employees seeking transit service to and from their jobs in Wilsonville at times of day when TriMet does not provide service,” said SMART Director Stephan Lashbrook. “We are doing what we can to address those commuting needs and give people an alternative to commuting by car.”

As of Aug. 5, a new 8X bus route is available to the public that will pick up passengers at 5:20 a.m. at TriMet’s Beaverton Transit Center and deliver them directly to Wilsonville’s SMART Transit Center on Barber Street. Arrival is set for 5:45 a.m. each morning, according to SMART.

In addition, SMART will offer an adjusted 2X route during the middle of the day to the Tualatin park-and-ride lot, where passengers currently connect with TriMet’s 76 bus route for continuing service to and from Beaverton.

Finally, each evening SMART will offer increased 2X service to the Tualatin park and ride as well as the Barbur Boulevard Transit Center in Portland. Additionally, another express 8X route bus will be offered to take passengers from Wilsonville to the Beaverton Transit Center for a 10:30 p.m. arrival.

All these services are being offered at times when the Westside Express Service train is not running between Beaverton and Wilsonville.

A standard fare of $1.50 for service to or from Tualatin or Barbur Boulevard will apply, along with a $3 fare for travel to or from Beaverton. Punch passes are available offering discounted rates.

“As with any new service, we will have to evaluate it and see if changes need to be made as we go along,” said Lashbrook. “For now though, I just hope people take advantage of the new service and ride SMART.”
